A Good Shepherd
This weekend we will observe Good Shepherd Sunday. David declares in Psalm 23 that the Lord is his shepherd. Jesus declares in John 10 that He is the Good Shepherd. So what is the significance of having a Good Shepherd? I asked Google what would happen if sheep were left without a shepherd and the AI generated response was this: “Without a shepherd, sheep are vulnerable and would likely struggle to survive. They are prone to wandering, getting lost, and being preyed upon by predators. Additionally, domestic sheep without shearing will experience wool matting, leading to health problems and potentially death.” Can sheep survive without a shepherd? Yes. Will life be as enjoyable for them as it would be with a shepherd? No.
But keep in mind the modifier “good.” The Scriptures make a clear distinction between any shepherd and a “Good Shepherd.” The Good Shepherd has the best interest of the sheep in mind. Do the sheep always understand that? Probably not.
This Sunday (May 11) is also Mother’s Day. There is a difference between being a mom and a “Good Mom.” Just like the Good Shepherd, a Good Mom has the best interests of her child in mind. She fulfills God’s law of love in loving Him with all her heart, soul, mind and strength and loving her child as herself. She is not controlling, but nurturing. She is not stoic, but compassionate. Can a child survive without a Good Mom? Yes. Will life be as enjoyable for him or her as it would be with a Good Mom? No.
So what if you did not have the experience of having a Good Mom? First, keep in mind these words from the LORD: “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of My hands.” (Isaiah 49:15-16a). Second, pray that the Good Shepherd restores your soul in leading you through the dark valley of bitterness and hurt to the healing of His compassionate care.
And if, like me, you were blessed with a wonderful Good Mom, give thanks to the Good Shepherd for leading your home growing up, asking that He would continue to be the Good Shepherd of your home now.
