Immanuel is Here … God is With Us

As we begin the fourth week of Advent, we know Christmas is right around the corner. Are you prepared? For some of us, that is answered by whether or not we have our shopping done, cookies baked, cards addressed and sent out, and decorating completed. For others, it is answered by thinking about Christmas being different this year because a loved one is home with our Lord while we’re still here. And for still others, we may not feel as if we have much to look forward to. Christmas is just another day. In the midst of our different feelings, the message that Jesus is the reason for the season would call us to stop and contemplate the wonder of what took place on that first Christmas. Very God of very God became true man, born of the Virgin. Immanuel is here. God is with us.

The wonder of the faith is the truth that God continues to be with us as the Holy Spirit leads us into a deeper relationship with our Lord Jesus which enables us to rejoice in the good news that where we go, Jesus goes as our Good Shepherd to lead us and guide us. When we pray in Jesus’ name, it is much more that some sort of magical phrase to ensure that our prayer will get through, but a reminder that through Christ we are the forgiven, redeemed children of God. Almighty God is truly our Father who loves us more than we know.

There will be things throughout life that bring us worry and anxiety, whether it be hectic schedules, grief, or loneliness. But Immanuel is here. God is indeed with us. As our verse for the week puts it: “The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” (Philippians 4:5–6 NIV) And as we do that, we delight all the more in the reason for the season. Prayers are answered. Our Savior has come. And in Him we have life in God’s Kingdom now and for eternity.
