Persevere

As I am writing this, the Milwaukee Brewers are down two games to none in a best of seven playoff series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Many have already given up, thinking that there is no way the Brewers can make a comeback. In fact, by the time you read this, they may be out of the playoffs.

On the other hand, they may still be in it and on their way to the World Series.

And as for the players, despite the difficult task at hand what must they do? Persevere.

The Scripture readings for this weekend's worship call us to that as well. But persevere in what?

In holding on to the Lord's promises that He has made to us in His Word, even when our present experience may make us question them.

In prayer instead of giving God the silent treatment when things aren't going well.

In worship with brothers and sisters in Christ and receiving our Lord's gift of His Supper in which He comes to us in, with, and under bread and wine for the forgiveness of sins and eternal life.

Does perseverance pay off? I guess that depends on what your goal is. If it is eternal life, there is no other way than in not giving up but following our Lord Jesus who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, for no one comes to the Father except through Him. (John 14:6)
