The attitude of the Blessed Virgin
For some young girls participating in Christmas pageants, portraying the Virgin Mary may be a dream role with all the attention on them. But for Mary who is told by an angel that she will go through a pregnancy that will come about in a truly unique fashion and that the Baby to whom she will give birth is the very Son of God… talk about pressure (not to mention all the attention she will get from those who want to know the “real story” behind her being with child). Yet Mary’s response to Gabriel was, “I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her. (Luke 1:38)
Shouldn’t he have stayed a bit longer to let it all settle in for Mary and answer any other questions she may have? Maybe she had no more questions but only the resolve to follow the Lord’s will for her in this situation. That is a wondrous example of faith and trust. One can see why Mary was chosen for her special role.
Perhaps you may not think of it this way, but the Lord has a special role for you as well. It may not be as dramatic as Mary’s role, but it is God-given nonetheless. And while an angel may not have come to tell you specifically what it is, the Holy Spirit will lead you to understand your role. Sincerely pray, asking the Lord for discernment as far as His will for you in your situation. And if you’re not happy with that role? Understand this: as long as one fights against God’s desire for him or her, one will never find true lasting contentment, which is why we pray that God the Holy Spirit would work in us the attitude of the Blessed Virgin: “I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled.”
O Lord, how shall I meet You, How welcome You aright?
Your people long to greet You, My hope, my heart’s delight!
O kindle, Lord most holy, Your lamp within my breast
To do in spirit lowly All that may please You best.
