Taking Time to Refocus and Rejuvinate
I always thought it was kind of ironic that we have a holiday called “Labor Day” on which we celebrate workers by not working. However, the whole concept of celebrating workers by not working goes back to God’s pattern in creation when He set aside the seventh day as a day of rest for the benefit of the humans who were charged with taking care of the world. Even before the fall into sin, that was a monumental task that would leave Adam and Eve tired and in need of rest. There is something to be said for a good tired after a productive day, and the need for a day off to refocus and rejuvenate.
So how does one refocus and rejuvenate? As one reads through the Scriptures, one thing that is apparent is the importance of community. For instance, the Sabbath Day, marked by no work, did also involve people gathered to sing God’s praises and meditate on His Word. And why was this done in community as opposed to every family simply doing its own thing on the Sabbath? There is something to be said for the mutual encouragement and sense of belonging together as God’s family that worshiping together brings, as well as the passing along to younger generations the importance of what has been passed down from age to age beginning with the apostles.
But life together as God’s family does not only involve worship. There is work to be done. I am so thankful for all who volunteer to serve on various Boards here at Beautiful Savior, who lead home Bible studies, who help with upkeep of the grounds, who help assist with special meals such as after funerals, who serve as ushers and greeters, who sing in the choir, who take the time to make visits and take special care of people needing assistance, and many other things.
As you enjoy a holiday weekend and, per chance, you have to buy something at a store, take the opportunity to thank the person who is working. And while you’re at it, thank the Lord for His marvelous design of work and rest, asking the holy Spirit to grant you wisdom to properly balance those in your life and find meaning and satisfaction in whatever opportunities you are given to serve Him and others.
